8 DO'S & DON'TS OF DATE NIGHT DRESSING.

what to wear on a date Chronicles of her

I should probably begin with a disclaimer: I've had the same boyfriend for several years, so "what to wear on a first date" isn't something I've given much thought to lately.

This post was actually inspired by an email I got from a reader, who asked what I would wear on a first date if I wanted to look "nice" without looking like I've tried at all.

Here's one I prepared earlier... plus some general do's and don'ts for date night dressing.

what to wear on a date Chronicles of her

DON'T:

Wear bodycon. It leaves nothing to the imagination, and no room for dessert.

Wear all white. Too many things can go wrong. Just don't do it to yourself.

Wear ridiculous heels. The higher the heel, the harder you look like you're trying.

Wear red lipstick. It's intimidating, and high maintenance.

DO:

Wear the pants. You know how people instantly look 50% more intelligent when they put glasses on? Well I think it's the same for women in pants. It shows you mean business.

Apply the 50/50 rule. If you're going for bare shoulders, cover-up on the bottom, and vice versa.

Wear your hair up. It says "I woke up like this".

Show-off your décolletage. It looks good across the table.

BLUE JEAN BABY.

Denim jeans are my (second) favourite wardrobe staple (after a great blazer or 10, of course), and at the moment I'm all about this pair...

Sometimes a break from black is in order, and with summer almost here in Australia I've been into a classic blue wash. It's fresh, relaxed and a little bit 90s, and pretty much works with any and every colour.

Throw on an oversized tee and a boyfriend blazer and you're good to go. Blue denim definitely feels more low-key than black, but a slick of eyeliner and a stiletto heel will take you anywhere.

MONDAY MOOD: COLOUR COMEBACK.

I want to make a colour comeback, but I'm finding it difficult. You see, bright colours really aren't my thing, so I set out to find some inspiration for a fresh new palette that's just as versatile as black and white.

This isn't to say I'm doing away with monochrome (never, ever!) but I'm definitely on the hunt for some new pieces to help me make-up with colour, and I've put together a wish list which you can shop below.

Beginning to alternate my black jeans with these blue ones is a start. Let's take it one step at a time.

I'm thinking pastels, navy and earthy tones are where it's at. What are your thoughts?

Natural makeup tutorial

Do this every morning to look fresh-faced without looking like you're wearing any make-up at all.

The first thing on my mind when I wake up is COFFEE. But not the instant type, or any I can make myself.

This means I need to get out the door quickly in the morning – preferably looking half decent.

So to get myself up and en route to my caffeine hit, I do this four-step routine every day. It's subtle, but brings a bit of colour (read LIFE) to your face without looking like you're wearing anything at all (a.k.a. I WOKE UP LIKE THIS).

1. HIGHLIGHT UNDER THE EYES.

Draw a line under the eye in the darkest part and blend with your finger. I also touch-up around my nose and any imperfections.

Natural makeup tutorial

2. CREME BLUSH.

A little bit of colour on the cheeks works wonders in the morning. Using a creme blush (this looks the most dewy and natural), apply a small amount to the centre of your cheek and press the colour outwards to blend.

Natural makeup tutorial

3. BRUSH-UP YOUR BROWS.

I never ever ever go anywhere without using the Bobbi Brown brow mascara. Brush the hairs upwards and outwards to open-up the eye area. I do this and skip mascara.

Natural makeup tutorial

4. THE LIP TINT.

A bit of subtle colour on the lips will tie in with the cheeks and bring your face to life. A sheer lipstick one or two shades darker than your natural lip colour will also make your lips look bigger.

Optional: there's something about smelling amazing that makes you feel 10 x better, so I never leave the house without a quick spritz.

J Brand lucy camisole Oroton wrap top

When your outfit options are running low, get creative with layering.

This trick will make even the simplest of outfits feel like your own.

Oroton cream wrap top black backpack givenchy sandals

1. Start with a simple outfit like pants and a camisole. All-black is always a good starting point.

2. Layer an oversized coat or wrap top over a camisole and tie around the waist.

3. Let one side hang down so one shoulder is exposed and you can see the camisole popping out underneath. Remember my post about 11 tips for a cooler work wardrobe? This is exactly what I did with the soft silk trench here.

4. Always put thought into your accessories. Mix it up with statement sandals or a backpack to make things less predictable. Happy Sunday!

If there's one new shoe you need now, this is it.

My love for great sneakers is nothing new.

It all started with these black and white Nike Free Runs. They're my staple shoe. They make everything look 10 x better and life is 10 x more comfortable. And I've always believed that if you're onto a good thing, then stick to it.

These pale grey Nike Roshe Runs are my latest obsession. They go with pretty much everything, and make all-black outfits way more exciting.

And unlike tights worn as pants, wearing sneakers outside the gym is totally socially acceptable – Chanel and Dior say so.

These are pretty hard to come by, but don't worry... I've done all the searching for you. There's still a few left here, herehere andhere.

Here's some others to kick-start your sneaker shopping. Enjoy x

THIS ONE TIME, I WORE A JUMPSUIT.

... and here's how it went down.

For me, shopping is like getting my way in an argument with my boyfriend – I know what works... and jumpsuits have never been it.

Not because I don't like them, but because they seem to cling to all the wrong places and make me look out of proportion, not to mention the fact that the whole 'onesie' concept just feels a bit.. off.

But this one  with its plunging neckline and soft shoulder pads – looked promising, so I decided to try my luck... and let's just say I'm damn happy I did.

It's super flattering and the subtle, structured shoulders make it perfect for both day and night.

Add some accents of gold hardware and jewellery and you're in business..

EVERYONE NEEDS A LITTLE BLACK MIDI DRESS.

Black mango blazer

It's the wardrobe staple you'll wonder how you lived without.

Here's why...

If you've read my secrets to a perfect wardrobe, you'll notice dresses didn't really get a look in... That is, unless they're perfect and practical.

I stumbled across this image during fashion week and it inspired me to up the dress count in my wardrobe.

I love how a blazer dresses this one down and toughens it up a bit, while the dipped hem and side split make it 10x more exciting than your average midi dress.

Pair it with Nikes and a boyfriend blazer and you're good to go.

LE WEEKEND.

My wardrobe code from Saturday to Sunday goes a little something like this...

On the weekend, first and foremost, I'm all about comfort. And when long lunches turn into dinner, or an afternoon drinks turn into evening (which is 90% of the time for me), I stick to the same wardrobe rule: dressed-down on top, with a heel added into the equation to take me through the evening.

I always dress-up a simple tee with great sunglasses and a feature bag. It's all in the details. At the moment I'm in love withthis mini bucket bag by Deadly Ponies. The textured croc leather and gold hardware make even the most basic outfit just a bit more exciting.

4 SUMMER ESSENTIALS FOR EVERY WARDROBE.

The weather is heating up, and my wardrobe is receiving some necessary new additions.

... is where it's at. A little Chanel inspired, sure. And it just makes every outfit feel instantly more French – which is never a bad thing.

In summer I like to downgrade from my Givenchy to something more lightweight. A small over-the-shoulder bag with a long strap is perfect for the warmer weather, plus it will force you to pack lightly. Your phone, cards, keys, sunglasses and a lip balm is all you need.

Keep it simple. I'm going for minimal leather sandals with raw-cut edges this summer.

I live in these in summer. Throw it on over a bikini when you're hitting the beach or for your weekly Sunday breakfast catch-ups. White always feels fresh and helps to give you a glow.

When I throw something on to race out the door, I always have two back-up options: all-black (no surprises there, obviously), and sneakers. If you've seen my blog before, I'm probably stating the obvious, so let's move right along.

A few months ago I had the pleasure of working with new label Tyrant Saint on their campaign, and needless to say, I fell in love with this backpack. Mixed-back with black pants, Nikes, and a backless, strappy camisole, it makes for the perfect off-duty combo, and a nice change from my usual blazer/trouser co-ords.

A LESSON IN LAYERING – PART II.

Stretch your wardrobe options a little bit further with this trick.

As I mentioned in part I, you can make something in your wardrobe look completely different just by getting creative with layering.

Every girl needs this little black midi dress. It's super versatile (see how to wear it with a blazer here), and it's probably the most comfortable thing in my wardrobe right now.

It's perfect for those 'meh' days when you just can't be bothered, but still want to look good... which = most week days for me.

Layering it over a pair of black pants instantly changes things up, so you can get away with wearing it over and over without anyone having a clue!

MY KIND OF DRESS.

I finally found 'the one'.

I'm not exactly sure what's going on at the moment, but as I've said before, I'm not usually a dress girl. They usually feel too overdone and feminine for me, but lately I've been lucking-out in the dress department.

First it was this black midi dress (still obsessed), and then this high-neck Camilla and Marc shift had me at hello.

I love that it can be worn from AM to PM. It's simple, but the right accessories take it to the next level - like my new favourite bag from Deadly Ponies. I love the way the beautiful texture breaks-up my minimal outfits on a day-to-day basis.

Oh, and some Givenchy flats don't hurt either. Together, they make the perfect dressed-up/dressed-down combo.

On another note, I have a couple of (very exciting) surprises coming for you shortly... but you'll have to stick around the find out what they are!

HAVING A GREY MOMENT.

All layered-up from head-to-toe.

Even I will admit - sometimes, black and white gets a little monotonous. The thought of wearing colour is nice, but it can be hard work.

If we were to cross paths on the street any given day of the week, 9 times out of 10 you'll find me in black, white, or a tonal mix of grey on grey.

If I'm really feeling fruity, there'll be some nude, khaki or blue in the mix, but right now I'm loving a clash of textures and tones in grey.

And if the whole head-to-toe thing is a bit much for you, get on board with grey accessories. They'll break-up an all-black outfit, they also look beautiful paired-back with white and the colour is far more versatile than I first thought.

Top it all off with some grey Nike Roshe Runs and you're in business. Done.

Oh, P.S. I got the chop! But more on that coming soon...

6 THINGS TO PACK FOR A SUMMER HOLIDAY.

$
0
0

Packing lightly has never been my forté, but here's 6 things I never holiday without.

1. THE DAY/NIGHT OUTFIT.

I always try to pack one outfit that can take me from day to night. It cuts down on packing space, and makes life easier all around.

For a summer getaway, I like a slinky camisole and high-waisted shorts in white or black.

2. THE SUMMER BAG.

Yes, sometimes even I take a break from black. Navy or grey is such a nice alternative for summer, and this size is big enough to fit all of my travel necessities, but not too bulky. I also love a long shoulder strap. It makes everything feel more relaxed.

3. THE BLACK SWIMMERS.

You can wear them as much as you want and it won't be "that" bikini that you've worn every day. Plus, black always looks polished and classic.

4. DRY SHAMPOO.

Skip the shampoo and conditioner and touch-up salty locks with some dry shampoo. It will save you time and space.

5. MULTI-PURPOSE MAKE-UP.

Less is more when it comes to make-up on holidays. Pack products that go that extra mile, like Nars The Multiple in South Beach. You can use it to contour, as a blush, and on the eyes and lips, too.

6. THE BIG BLACK SHADES.

Great for hiding behind when you have a hangover. I never leave home without my Karen Walkers!

MY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS FOR 2015.

$

Let's get busy!

I'm not very good at setting goals. I can't get a grasp on what's realistic and what's not, so I usually skip the whole process altogether to avoid letting myself down.

But there's something in the air in 2015, and it feels good, so I decided to set some goals for this year and share them with you.

They may or may not be relevant to you, but they're things I've been needing to change for a while, and hopefully they give you a bit of motivation. It's onwards and upwards from here!

Would love you to share yours with me in the comments, too.

chronicles of her style fashion

1. NO PUTTING THINGS OFF.

If something is bothering me or hanging over my head, I'm going to deal with it straight away. This year is all about getting it done and moving on.

2. BE LESS INDECISIVE.

I'm the annoying dinner date that just actually can't decide whether I want a Pinot Gris, Pisco Sour or Classic Margarita. This year I'm putting a limit on the time I allow myself to make decisions, and I'm going to be confident in my choices.

chronicles of her style fashion

3. WEAR WHAT I WANT, WHEN I WANT, WHERE I WANT.

No one ever got ahead by playing it safe. Break the rules a bit. Dress codes are so flexible these days.

4. STEP OUTSIDE MY COMFORT ZONE.

I mean this in a style sense. Expect to see some fun new additions in my wardrobe i.e. prints and COLOUR.

chronicles of her hair style fashion

5. START EVERY DAY WITH A GREEN JUICE.

Green apple, celery, kale, parsley, ginger, lemon, a whole garlic clove (yes, really) and black pepper. Sounds scary, but it's actually not that bad.

I've made a promise to myself that I'll put more time into my wellbeing this year because if you're not fit, happy and healthy, you can't reach your full potential anyway.

6. BE THE CATCH-UP PLANNER.

I'm never the planner, I usually let myself get so caught up with work that I can't even make it at all.

This year, I'm going to be the initiator... more breakfasts, more days at the beach, and more cocktails! Amen.

7. MAKE THE CHRONICLES OF HER BIGGER & BETTER THAN EVER.

Some well overdue changes are coming. Watch this space.

For people who don't like wearing gym clothes.

Chronicles of her workout clothes

I'm not going to lie, the gym and I don't cross paths often, but in the name of holding-up my health goals and new year's resolutions in 2015, I decided to give myself an incentive  and what could be better to get things (i.e. me) moving than some new workout clothes?

Lycra and I have never been friends, so I wear things that feel a little closer to home  like black, Nikes and pieces that are less hardcore gym junkie, more Sunday morning yoga, like these David Lerner leggings and crop top by Out Incorporated.

Mix it back with a few pieces from your everyday wardrobe (hi Karen Walker shades, denim shirt and Balenciaga Padlock Mini) and you're ready to rock n' downward dog (yes, I'm in a particularly lame mood today).

That way, if you have a post-gym juice date or need to run errands afterwards you'll feel more.... you.

INSIDE HÈRMES ON THE BEACH.

When Hermès invites you to a party, you dance.

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of attending Hermès on the Beach – pretty much the party of the year (as in, as soon as it's over you immediately start counting down the days until the next one).

Why? Put it this way – Hermès never does things in halves. If they're going to throw a party, it's a spectacular – there's larger than life Hermès accoutrements, there's dancers, there's free-flowing French champagne and more Hermès silks than La Maison des Carrés (ok, not quite, but you get the picture). And the dress code? Barefoot, of course – nonchalantly paired-back with something fabulous.

I snuck in before the festivities began to give you a glimpse behind friends-of-Hermès-only doors at Sydney's iconic Strickland House where the event was held.

I hope you enjoy. I know I definitely did!
