They say 'when all else fails, wear black'. But what if a) it's the middle of summer, b) you're by the beach and c) you just don't feel like wearing black? 

We all know I rarely stray from black, but for those 'nothing to wear' days, I say it's important to have default outfits for every scenario, or default pieces at least. 

What am I talking about? 

Classic, oversize button-up shirts. Denim shorts. The perfect-fitting pair of jeans. An awesome black blazer...

And beautiful fine jewellery pieces you never have to take off because they're subtle enough to wear with everything. 

When I'm stuck with 'nothing to wear', I always go back to these classics. You could say it's a little unadventurous, but I always think less is more.

I arrived in London late last week to visit my sister. 

We decided to make the most of the European summer and spend some quality time together (i.e. soaking up some rays and sipping cocktails) in Positano next week. 

Sydney was (by Australian standards) freezing when I left, so I was pretty excited to escape, and while the weather in London has been pretty amazing since I landed, I've been trying to find any excuse to wear my new knit from And Other Stories – and the slightly cold change in the air this morning was good enough. 

What's so good about it?

The high neck, square shoulders and textured detail is everything. It's special enough to wear dressed up, and understated enough to wear when you're just hanging.

This morning's coffee run to Ottolenghi called for my favourite Nobody skinnies (ultra-black, high-waisted and the perfect length) and Nikes.

By the way, if you're a London local and you feel like giving-up your locals only cafe and restaurant tips, I'd love to hear them!

I know workwear is probably the last thing I should be thinking about on holiday, but I've made many new additions to my wardrobe in London and I was too excited not to share them. 

Workwear is something I haven't given much thought to for a while because I'm now working from home full time, but we all know I have a tendency towards tailoring, so I've been missing my structured tops and pencil skirts.

If getting dressed for work doesn't really excite you, and it's becoming a bit monotonous, it's time to think of subtle ways to inject some life back into your working wardrobe. 



I make sure I can wear my working wardrobe on the weekend, and vice versa.

It's all about finding pieces with some sort of original detailing that makes them just that little bit more special, like the gold button on this skirt. Obsessed!



I'm still going through my flats-only stage, and I'm all about brogues and oxfords at the moment. 

They're classic, clean and still dressy enough to wear to work. Oh, and they make coffee runs and staircases so. much. easier.

Make-up artists have a way of working extra magic with a face and making the most of its features.

Nailing a golden sun-kissed make-up look that can take you from day to night is something I hadn't managed to master yet because I could never seem to find the right shade of golden brown shadow, and most of my lip colours seem to take away the "natural" factor when added into the equation. 

A little while ago I met Australian make-up artist Liz Jones on a shoot and she introduced me to her range of make-up kits. 

I've always been a little bit wary of kits because there are always some products in them that I don't like or need, and never enough of the good stuff, but this bronze face compact has quickly become a favourite – particularly while travelling in Positano!

The key is to keep it natural, using the concealer to touch-up blemishes, a bit of bronzer on the cheeks, copper bronze shadow to subtly contour the eye area and a white eye pencil to open-up the eyes and make them pop. 

Top it off with a few coats of mascara on the top lashes and a slick of the perfectly peachy and glossy, but not-too-glossy lip colour and you're good to go!

I love how all of the colours seem to compliment each other, and the white eye pencil is an essential little extra that makes a huge difference. 

Yep. You can thank me later.

Whether you're seeing out the colder months in Australia, or preparing for a long cold winter in the northern hemisphere, a branded statement sweater is always a good idea. 

This one by Acne Studios is surprisingly versatile, and the classic, cult-worthy design means it'll be one of those pieces you'll hold on to for years to come. 

Here's four ways to wear it, whether you're cruising around on the weekend or heading out after hours.

You can take or leave this suggestion, but I dress to impress my friends so bodycon and I haven't seen eye to eye since my 18th birthday, hence why I would definitely wear this outfit to drinks with the girls.

First and foremost, sorry I've been M.I.A. I arrived home from London to a new home, a new season and a new desire to make Chronicles of Her better than ever. 

Monday mornings can be rough, so from now on, every Monday morning you'll find a feed of inspiring images right here, to get you up out of bed, put a smile on your dial and (hopefully) inspire you to start wearing the other 80% of your wardrobe.

It's a week of newness on The Chronicles of Her. A new Monday Mood inspiration post, this week it's about 'white', which signifies new beginnings, a clean slate and a fresh start. And I've found a new everyday fragrance, Bottega Veneta's KNOT.

When it comes to choosing a new perfume, do you a) choose one because the bottle will make pretty Instagram pictures, b) make your decision based solely on the scent, c) choose whatever you think will make you most appealing to a certain someone or d) all of the above?

... you need to add KNOT by Bottega Veneta to your collection. They've nailed it with this super chic bottle (the knot detail is the same as the clasp on their iconic box clutches!). It's the most photogenic fragrance I've seen in a long time.

... and you like roses, peonies, neroli and orange flower, then you will also like it. I'm not usually one for overly floral fragrances. I don't think people will take me seriously. But this one has just the right amount of depth to make it perfect for daytime - whether you're headed to the beach or the boardroom.

Whether you're saying hello to spring or feeling the cool change of fall, it's this time of year that you hit the panic button. All of a sudden, you have nothing to wear. Well, nothing that you actually want to wear because it's all like, so last year.

But with a bit of strategic styling you can stretch your winter wardrobe a little further, and vice versa. 

Here's an option for both seasons, worn by my friend Ava and I while hanging out at one of my favourite coffee spots in Bondi, Will & Co.

SPRING:



The weather's trying to be warm in Sydney, but it's not quite there. You might not be able to lighten-up the layers yet, but you can lighten your colour palette. Try mixing white, cream, lighter denims and other neutrals. Needing inspiration? Here's some I prepared earlier.

FALL:



Layer a leather jacket over your summer dresses to continue wearing them until bare legs are out of the question. This also toughens a dress up a bit, which I like.



THE SHOES:



Mix it up. Wear trainers with your dresses, and slides with jeans and knits.

This week's theme is a personal favourite of mine. 

I'd have an entirely monochrome wardrobe if I could actually be so disciplined to edit it down to that. There's just something so special about crisp white and the blackest of blacks, and when done right, the two mixed together or colour blocked head-to-toe can have more impact than the brightest of colours. 

Don't just stop at the wardrobe. Monochrome looks awesome everywhere - from beauty products to the bathroom.

My office is in my bedroom (bad feng shui, I know... I'm working on it!) so if I showed you what I actually wear most of the time I don't think it would leave you feeling too inspired, but when I go out to meetings and events I like to dress up – it's a corporate vibe, but always with an interesting twist.

A few weeks ago I was in Brisbane at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre for their Feast of Fashion event, and while hanging out in the newly refurbished designer section I found these beautiful pieces – simple, but unique – and was instantly inspired to do this post.

Here's 11 tips for a cooler working wardrobe:



1. Pay attention to detail. How you button your shirt , or how you roll your sleeves can make an outfit your own.



2. A crisp white shirt never fails. Try pairing it with something a little unexpected, like knee length shorts. 



3. Invest in simple statement pieces. This white shirt is versatile, but far more interesting than most. It's always worth spending a little more for these unique pieces.



4. Shoes are everything. Use a statement heel to make an otherwise simple outfit exciting.

5. Try soft suiting. A soft trench coat is a must this season, and you can wear it on the weekends too.

6. Look for pieces with a point of difference, like the shoulder cut-outs on this top.



7. Get creative with layering. Try pieces on together that you wouldn't normally go for. Sometimes the result will surprise you. 

8. Go for cropped trousers. Showing a little bit of ankle is flattering and shows off your shoes.



9. Consider flats. They give workwear a cool, understated vibe.

10. Make this a rule: if the outfit is soft and feminine, balance it out with a more masculine shoe (like brogues), and vice versa.

11. Colour block. It always looks polished. If white is out of the question, grey, navy, neutrals, and of course, black, are also good options.

While we're on the topic of how to dress during the in-between seasons, let's talk about lip stains. Why?

Because they're awesome. Why? 

Because they're subtle, and pretty, and easy to apply, and not as high maintenance lipstick, and they give your face the boost of colour it needs to make you look fresh and awake, without looking like you've really tried. 



At the moment I'm all about YSL's Glossy Stain in Rouge Laque. It's exactly the right shade of red.





One coat is perfect for daytime, when your face needs a little kickstart with a pop of colour. 

I'm not usually into gloss, but this one kind of sets so the shine factor isn't too... well, glossy. It's definitely not matte, but the glossy texture feels nice and makes your lips look fuller.



A few coats turns-up the intensity so it's the perfect all-in-one to keep in your handbag for on-the-go touch-ups from AM to PM.

First things first, if you asked me to describe myself in three words, 'sexy' wouldn't be one of them. Who am I kidding? It wouldn't even make the top 50. 

I spend most of my days in boyfriend blazers, oversized shirts and brogues, which probably doesn't work in my favour in that department – besides leaving a lot to imagination.

But dressing up in something you feel good in is a great feeling, and something I think all women should do for themselves when they can. And while I'm not ready to kiss my culottes goodbye, I'm all for bringing sexy back. Everything in moderation, I say. 







When I dress up, I like structured silhouettes with beautiful details, like this top and skirt by Australian designer Yeojin Bae, from her new Timeless Sensuality Collection.

The sporty vibe makes it super wearable, and the high neck plays-down the backless detail, striking the perfect balance between sexy and sophisticated. After all, sexy is about showing a little, not a lot.

You know how they say you don't know what you've got till it's gone? Well I say you also don't know what you've been missing until you find it.

That's exactly how I feel about my new Gucci 'Horsebit' watch. It's like my super-chic new best friend, that comes everywhere with me and is always on time. 

Accessories usually make me feel overdone. Over-styled. Like I've over-thought what I'm wearing (which is never the look I'm going for), but the unassuming design of the Horsebit is timeless and slightly androgynous - making it the perfect partner in time for my boyfriend blazers, suits and trench coats. 





A watch isn't usually something you swap and change like your handbag, so it needs to be versatile. I love that this one is classic (inspired by Gucci's signature horsebit icon which you'd recognise from their shoes and bags) and modern at the same time.

1. THE HERO BLACK TROUSERS. 

It's probably weird to have an obsession with something so basic, but I've developed an addiction to great black pants. These ones have replaced this pair that changed my life (I upgraded!), and I also just bought this pair which are a totally different vibe but equally awesome.



2. A BLACK BOYFRIEND BLAZER.

The perfect one is almost impossible to come by unless you're willing to spend your entire week's pay check on Isabel Marant (or perhaps a couple of week's worth on Givenchy?). 

There's just something about a longline boyfriend blazer with structured shoulders that makes me feel good. Slouchier styles always look just the right amount of dressed-up, whether worn with sleek black trousers or ripped denim and a tank. 





3. KNOT BY BOTTEGA VENETA. 

If you took my fragrance quiz you'd already know what I love about this new scent. 

Besides the obvious (damn bottle, you fine), the fragrance itself teleports me back to not so long ago when I was sipping cocktails, seaside in Positano. You could say it's getting me through my post-holiday depression.

Every year when the racing seasons come around, my friends and I are in the same predicament – what can I wear that a) doesn't make me look and feel completely ridiculous b) doesn't require wearing something fluffy or feathered on my head and c) still looks polished and sophisticated?

Unless you're gunning for Fashions on the Field, I'm of the belief that the rules were made to be broken. Besides, you rarely get ahead by playing it safe. 

Here are my tips for getting it right:



1. THINK OUTSIDE THE SQUARE. 

When choosing an outfit, I try to do things differently and look to the runway for inspiration (relaxed suits and pinstripes, anyone?). Don't limit yourself to dresses. Consider a suit or a skirt and top combination. I go for things I know I'll wear beyond the day.



2. DON'T OVER-THINK YOUR ACCESSORIES.

Don't lash out a new clutch and new shoes with matching nail polish so you're tonal head-to-toe. Incorporate your normal bags and shoes into your outfit. It's more understated, and less work for you.



3. HEADWEAR. 

I don't do fascinators. Full stop. End of story. But this doesn't mean I'm ever without options. Consider hats, or a headband if you're into that kind of thing.

I wore a straw boater hat (which you can see on my Instagram) to the races on the weekend. It was a multi-purpose investment because I now have one just in time for the Australian summer!

4. STICK TO THE SEASONS.

The only rule I stick to is lighter colours with straw hats for spring, or darker tones with felt hats for autumn. 

This is mainly for practical purposes. I once wore leather to spring carnival and it wasn't exactly pleasant.

I've never been a textbook "girly-girl". Something about soft pink cheeks and floaty floral dresses feels a little too predictable to me. 

Instead, I always consider one of my favourite mantra's to live by when making my wardrobe choices, too – everything in moderation.

This week on Chronicles of Her it's all about mixing the masculine, oversized and relaxed with the soft, subtle and feminine. Toughen-up a midi dress with a boyfriend blazer thrown over the top, or pair your favourite sundress with some statement brogues. The beauty is in striking the perfect the balance.

You know you want to. 

So what's stopping you? Probably the fact that you associate 'crop' with bare abs (or lack thereof), which can be daunting. Like one of those trends you'd rather bypass and pretend wasn't happening. 

Kind of like my coping mechanisms for the new season's boho redux.

But "going for the crop" can mean many things in fashion, and it needn't necessarily involve fake tan and a new daily sit-ups routine. 

Here's four reasons (and ways) to embrace the crop:



1. IT'S FLATTERING.

When paired with high-waisted pants, a crop creates the illusion of longer legs and can make you look taller. 



2. EVERYONE CAN WEAR IT. 

Before you go throwing things at your screen, hear me out. 

'Crop' is a very broad term. You could go for a teeny tiny bra-like crop, a longer crop, a boxy-shaped crop... it really comes down to two things – whether you're willing to bare it all or just a little, and what you feel most confident in.

And for my friends currently embracing fall – consider layering a blazer over the top. I love a tiny bit of skin sneaking out of a relaxed suit. 



4. YOU CAN WEAR IT DIFFERENT WAYS.

If the word 'crop' (or the number of times I've said it in this post) is starting to make you nauseous, you could always layer a collared shirt underneath to embrace the trend without baring anything at all. It's like having your cake and eating it too (literally).

It's days like this that I really love my job. 

A little while ago I set out on the road with Tim Ashton, his assistant Alex and my assistant Sam to basically hang out for the day in a car park shooting beautiful clothes to create an editorial for Playing Fashion.
